Angelina Jolie Oscar winner visits Somali refugees

Oscar award winning actress Angelina Jolie – a UN High Commissioner for Refugees Goodwill Ambassador – has visited UN-managed Dadaab Refugee Camps, the world’s largest refugee settlement, located in the northeastern Kenya. Accompanied by UNHCR officials, Jolie described the situation in the camps as “one of the most dire” refugee settlements she had ever visited. She met with new arrivals mostly women and their children who fled the worsening conflict in their war-torn homeland, Somalia.
“If this is the better solution, what must it be like in Somalia?” she asked while having chat with the new comers.
Located some 90 kilometres from the border with Somalia, Dadaab Complex consisting of three camps is one of the world’s oldest refugee camps, which is built to house some 90,000 people, but currently holding more than three times that number – mostly Somalis.
Last month, The UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres paid a visit to the camps and appealed for massive injection of funds to help thousands of refugees. The UN chief said the influx of the refuges, which overstretched scarce resources left the agency enable to maintain even the basic requirements for the complex.
